Never Came Down

I was sick in the heart

I was sick in the head

And the voices they kept screaming

I just couldn’t stay in bed

So I drove without reason and I really don’t know how

But I drove and I ended up here outside your house

Darling if you have a minute

Won’t you let me in

If I’m over in the neighborhood

We might as well be friends

‘Cause I know you ain’t got nobody and I ain’t got nobody too

I know this isn’t what we thought it’d be

But darling I need you

But you never come on down

No you never let me up

And I knew it was a stretch

But I was gonna test my luck

‘Cause I thought that you might wanna see my face again

So I turned around and drove

An hour east outside of town

I was headed for the lock bridge

I was gonna cut ours down

But when I got there it was severed

All the others were cut too

Threw those old keys in the river

Back when it was running blue

But you never came on down

No you never let me in

Thought that pounding on the walls you build up

Might just make ‘em thin

‘Cause I thought that you might want a beating heart again

I watched the sun set from the other side of the state line

On the mountain roads I wanted

To go get lost for a while

Started tracing all your poetry

In the red earth through the night

Didn’t see the mud stains on my dress

‘Till the early morning light

I never came on down

No I just kept heading up

‘Cause up there in the clouds

I could shake off all the dust

I never thought that I could breathe that free

No I never thought that I could breathe that free again
